“Disney” scam artist not Chinese

On 3 News earlier tonight, housewife and mother Julie King was targeted by posing as working for Disney and asking for her number. The caller claimed to be from Florida, but the number on her cellphone indicated she was from .
I do not believe the caller was Chinese at all. I believe, however, there are certain exchanges that may route through a Chinese service, and this includes some phone card services.
Recently, I received a personal call from Switzerland from a similar number. While I cannot recall Mrs King’s number on her , I believe it was similar to the (00) 86 818 801-1405 number that I saw on my ID. Such a number results in a disconnected message behind the Bamboo Curtain. In my case, it was an innocent phone card number.
I’m putting up this advisory as I cannot see the item on the 3 News website, nor can I find a feedback link. Hopefully this entry will come up in Google in due course.
There is an easy solution: do what I do, and do not use cellphones. I never have, and never will. Or, if you must use one—Mrs King has a family, so it is reasonable that she does—do not give out the number except to your partner and your kids.

I disagree with you about cell phones. I've found mine so useful and handy that I had my regular phone disconnected. I remember travelling home for Christmas one time. The airport shuttle that was supposed to take me to the airport was seriously late and ended up causing me to miss my flight. Thanks to my cell phone, I was able to notify my Dad on the spot vice having to hunt for a pay phone and come up with enough change to pay for the call. At the Post Office, they are one of the main ways the supervisors keep in touch with the mail carriers on the street.

In regards to scams, you have to be careful in all mediums. I've had a number of scam emails from Nigeria which seems to be really bad for various scams.
Ron, given the choice, I would use a pay phone and put the call on a calling card or pay with a credit card. They are reasonably commonplace at airports, and I still do not like our governments tracking us and our locations with each call we make using cells, not to mention the health risk and exposure to possible testicular cancer.
Jack, I think Big Brother has better things to do than track you via your cell phone calls. You don't strike me as someone they would have to worry about.
Still, if it’s all the same, I would rather I not show up on its radar at all!
   (I do make al-Qaeda jokes. A lot.)
