16.2.07 New Blogger: all that hassle for nothing
[Cross-posted] I can’t understand what’s superior about the new Blogger, which I was forced to change to, otherwise Google would not let me in.
I have to type in a longer email address as my username. The cookies forget that I am even signed in. I seem to recall Blogger claiming I would not have to wait for the publication of posts because it was all instantaneous. Right now, I am at Vox while I am waiting for the publication of posts because it is not instantaneous. It’s been a few minutes. I notice no time difference between old and new Blogger. It lets me do tags. Great. Waste more space. I was already doing tags anyway, using other services. The conversion process was bollocks. The reason I am waiting is that it couldn’t convert my old template properly, rendering a few characters unreadable. I had to go in manually to change them. I’m stuck with that load of cobblers for now, but it is yet another example of computer types “improving” things without understanding normal human behaviour. Blogger should have let us stay with a choice of old or new. Let the geeks go on to the new one and talk up how things have improved, and we stupid mere mortals can stay with the old and get on with our work. I would have recommended Blogger had they let it be. Now, with all these “improvements”, I think I will recommend Vox. Posted by Jack Yan, 04:44

I wasn't happy about being forced to switch to the new blogger either. In regards to improvements, I have found it publishes new blog entries faster. It also enables you to review comments without going to the blog page itself. I think the benefit of that is that it won't cause your counter to credit a bogus hit. Still, I don't think I can complain too much about Google forcing me to go to the new Blogger. The service is still free and I enjoy blogging. It has even motivated to go to various places just so I could have something interesting to blog about.
Ron, I haven’t noticed a speed change with publishing, though loading seems to be quicker. However, I object to being signed in to Google. Being on the new Blogger means Google can track all my searches if I want the Blogger cookie to remember me. Of course, I do not want them to know where I search: it is none of their business. Therefore, I now face the added inconvenience of signing in and out.
Hey Jack, you already know what I think about blogger. I am not so much worried about Google but I have found blogger to not be very easy to work with. I am all for VOX for personal blogging and TypePad for professional blogging.
Honestly Jack, with your taste and design flare, I think you would like Typepad or MoveableType a lot better for your professional blog.
Randy, you’ve never steered me wrong on software so I will consider it. My number-one concern is that installing all this software sounds terribly complicated, and I don’t have the patience with computer geeks who speak their own weird language.
