18.3.06 Tracking plagiarism
Thanks to coComment—a useful tool to track comments—which put me on to Unhandled Perception, I learned about Copyscape, a web site that helps authors track whether someone has plagiarized their work. This is likely to become a hotter and more important issue as the 21st century unfolds. Just type in your web page and the site hunts for others that duplicate its contents. (Try Copyspace here.)

As much as I love copyscape, and I do, I love Google Alerts more (http://www.google.com/alerts). You can set it up to email you as new instances of your work appear online. The only challenge is finding a unique sentence from your work to search for.
This ia free service and something that Copyscape charges (pretty heavily) for. You also get more than ten results, which is nice. Just something to try out. # posted by Jonathan Bailey: 3/19/2006 03:19:00 AM
Very interesting. I know that college professors have started using software like that to see if kids are plagarising. In the world of blogging it seems there are a lot of copy/past stealers out there.
Gentlemen, thank you. David, you are right. Even when I taught a design paper in 1999, some students copied and pasted from the web on one assignment (they were not prohibited from doing som as the assignment was about layout). To me, the concept seems foreign: surely originality and a sense of honour were taught to them long before they got to me at a tertiary level? Evidently not.
