Toxic, but not slipping under

Two quickies referred to me by Helen Baxter (The Business Blog for Kiwi Creatives). One is Blackspot Shoes, designed to fight the likes of by being . From its introduction: ‘Earth-friendly, anti-, cruelty free, and pro-grassroots, Blackspots are the only rough-and-ready shoes designed to give toxic megacorporations what they need the most: a swift kick in the brand.’ Down side: Blackspots is sometimes intercapitalized (BlackSpots). Even anti-brands need to have consistent if they are to work. are , too, as much as they don’t want to hear that.
Connected to Blackspot is Adbusters, which most readers will be familiar with. They’re keeping an eye on Canwest, the parent company to TV3 and More FM here in . The odd thing, as Helen relayed to me, is that these subsidiaries have decent people who don’t necessarily follow the ’s directive. After briefly touching base with some TV3 folks last week—viz. anchor and his producer and collaborator —this is true. Nevertheless, ‘Canwest Watch’ produces some food for thought about the top of at TV3’s parent. You decide.

As for the blackspot sneakers, there is a perfectly acceptable alternative. They are the NoSweat shoes sold by pretty much any Trade Aid in NZ. They are, stylistically, almost exactly the same as the Converse Canvas shoes. Ethically, they are produced to humane standards. They are a damn fine shoe, being a proud owner.
I read about Blackspot shoes in Inc. Magazine a few issues back but hadn't heard of them since. I remember being quite impressed with the idea (socially responsible motive + the desire to combat Nike) and wondered about creating a similar company but for all apparel at the time. I hope more companies go the same route and think that there is just enough social concern right now to make them take off on a larger scale.

Kris: Thanks for mentioning NoSweat. I checked out their site and am going to attempt to order a few items to the US.

Entries from 2006 to the end of 2009 were done on the Blogger service. As of January 1, 2010, this blog has shifted to a Wordpress installation, with the latest posts here.
With Blogger ceasing to support FTP publishing on May 1, I have decided to turn these older pages in to an archive, so you will no longer be able to enter comments. However, you can comment on entries posted after January 1, 2010.
